A report released in November 2022 by the Auditor General's Office of Canada focused on chronic homelessness and the effectiveness of the current federal government's National Housing strategy. The report found that there was minimal federal accountability for reaching the National Housing Strategy target to reduce chronic homelessness by 50% by the 2027–28 fiscal year.
Carolina Ibarra, Pacifica Housing CEO, joined CBC Radio Victoria host Gregor Craigie to discuss this report and give her response on these findings. A key takeaway: most housing currently built under the national housing strategy is simply not affordable to people at risk of or experiencing homelessness, and the current economic climate of high inflation is exasperating this issue.
